The context for the 2020 Presidential elections includes a global COVID-19 pandemic, mass rebellion against racism and police violence, and gains of the far-right in elected office and in the streets.
Within that, SURJ is all in to defeat Trump with campaigns to mobilize our base to defend the election and swing Georgia left. We’re also supporting over 150 chapters around sustained anti-racist action in the face of political repression, among other on-going racial justice work.
This webinar is part of our on-going commitment to Political Education, a critical component informing strategy and movement building. Our hope is that this webinar supports our base to increase understanding of the threats we face at this time -- from how they emerged to the range of dynamics that sustain them, inside and outside government structures; identify key aspects of struggles in relationship to those threats; and empower folks to take strategic action, despite the threats.
Rachel Herzing lives and works in Oakland, California, where she fights the violence of policing and imprisonment. She is the executive director of Center for Political Education, a resource for political organizations and movements on the left, the working class and people of color.
Matthew N Lyons has been writing about right-wing politics for over 25 years. His work focuses on the interplay between right-wing movements and systems of oppression, and responses to these movements by leftists, liberals, and the state. He writes regularly for the radical antifascist blog Three Way Fight, and his work has also appeared in the Guardian, New Politics, Socialism and Democracy, teleSUR, Upping the Anti, and other publications. Lyons is author of Insurgent Supremacists: The U.S. Far Right’s Challenge to State and Empire (PM Press and Kersplebedeb Publishing, 2018).
Hilary Moore is a political educator and has written on the topics of anti-racism and social movements for the last ten years. Her work focuses on the far right, climate change, state structures, and systems of oppression, as well as liberal and left forms of resistance. She teaches with generative somatics and volunteers on the Leadership Team of Showing Up for Racial Justice. She is the author of "Burning Earth, Changing Europe: How the Racist Right Exploits the Climate Crisis–And What We Can Do About It" (Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, 2020). She co-authored of No Fascist USA! The John Brown Anti-Klan Committee and Lessons for Today’s Movements (City Lights/Open Media, 2020) and Organizing Cools the Planet: Tools and Reflections to Navigate the Climate Crisis (PM Press, 2011).
